Summer Reading Program...How I Became a Pirate!!!

We have been having some serious excitement in the Summer Reading Program at the Community Center. The readers have been working hard, and a few will be earning their Wendy's Frosty very soon, as they each hit the five-hour reading mark. This last week we read the book How I Became a Pirate to get into the piratey mood. After that, we ventured out on a scavenger hunt in search of the pirate booty! Everyone got involved and we had a ton of fun!!!

Are You Prepared?

The South Franklin Community Center paired up with United Way of Utah County and the American Red Cross this past weekend to put on an Emergency Preparedness Fair to remember! Americorps VISTA member George VanDeWater gave an excellent presentation on natural disasters that could happen here in Utah County, misconceptions people may have about being prepared, and how to better equip your home and family members for the unexpected. If you have any questions about how to better prepare for emergencies, George is your man! The American Red Cross gave out tons of info about First Aid, CPR, and resources in the community that our useful when it comes to disasters. It was a great event overall. Thanks to those who attended and those who helped present!

George shows a community member what he puts in his "go bag".
What's a go bag? When there is an emergency, you grab the bag and go!

The American Red Cross was ready and willing to help community
members be more prepared

Sully Bryan explains to a community member how to help children understand the importance of being prepared. We still have more workbooks for children if anyone wants one!

Rain or Shine...Beginning of Summer BBQ

This past Saturday the South Franklin Beginning of Summer BBQ was a great success! Community members did not let the unpredictable Utah weather deter them from coming out to meet their neighbors and have a good time. There were games, prizes, a bounce house, rockin music, face painting and lots of food and treats for everyone. Organizations from all over Provo came to hand out information about the resources they offer to the residents of Provo. We had so many awesome volunteers come to help make sure everything went smoothly.

Thank you to everyone who came and helped make it an enjoyable and exciting afternoon!
